Let’s Talk About Micro OLED- The Vision Pro Display From Apple

At the WWDC 2023, Apple went on to announce the Vision Pro, which is an AR/VR headset that would offer one an impressive amount of technology. The price tag attached to it is also a whopping $3,499. One of the many features that helps this stand out from other products like Meta or Valve is a new form of display, called Micro OLED. This is not just a rebranding from the team of the parent company, as this is a variation on the screen technology that has been used for the best TVs over the last few years.

The main difference that Micro OLED shares with other traditional OLED is pretty much in the name. The newer version features far smaller pixels, with it having the potential for much, much higher resolutions than the average traditional OLED. One could think of a 4K TV resolution on chips which would have the size of an everyday postage stamp. Until quite recently, this technology had been used in things like electronic viewfinders in cameras, but it is now being developed with even higher resolutions, which makes it perfect for AR and VR headsets.

Micro OLEDs, for those who are wondering, feature one of those rare instances where the technology used is exactly as it sounds. There are tiny OLED microdisplays, and in this particular case, not only are the pixels quite small themselves, but the entire panels are small as well. This has been due to the advancement in manufacturing, which includes mounting the display-making segment in every pixel directly to a silicon chip. This would also enable the pixel to be a lot tinier.
