Facebook and Instagram advertisements may have become too debilitating and distracting for users. If you are one of those who has this opinion, then Meta may be offering an option to use these apps without any advertisements whatsoever. However, that will probably come at a price.
Meta’s New Potential Subscription Offer
As per a report by the New York Times on Friday, Meta has been discussing offering its platforms for social media in a version that can be paid for as well. However, for now, the idea is only limited to the European Union. In return for the extra fee, users will be able to use the apps without any hindrance by ads. The plan has no immediate timeline. Moreover, the amount that will be charged for Instagram and Facebook’s ad-free version is also up for speculation.
As for now, the plans for this service remain confidential. As such, none of the sources that spoke about this plan to the Times gave their identity. Meta is yet to reply to the request sent by Mashable for a comment on the matter as well. When it came to the Times, they have declined altogether. However, the new Meta plan, if true, will not be a surprising event. This is primarily because if the company can let its users experience its apps without ads, it would let Meta skirt around concerns regarding privacy and other EU regulators’ uneasiness.
The news arrives as a long-drawn-out battle involving Meta and EU regulators continues regarding the data collection practices of the company. In response, the EU passed the 2016 Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation – among the most significant legislation designed to protect the data and privacy of people online. Since 2016, the EU has resorted to the GDPR in its efforts to ensure more protection for users in the EU regarding online data and privacy.
