On Thursday, Apple unveiled a significant update to Final Cut Pro, rolling out an array of new features, one of which is the capability to generate captions using AI technology. However, not all users will be able to utilize this new function at launch, as it currently supports only a single language.
Final Cut Pro now transcribes audio into captions, limited to English
With the new Transcribe to Captions feature, users can effortlessly create subtitles for their videos with just a click. Final Cut Pro leverages artificial intelligence to transcribe audio and automatically generate closed captions in the timeline. However, some users are disappointed as the feature is exclusively available in English at launch.
According to a support article from Apple, Transcribe to Captions employs an AI language model trained specifically on “spoken English-language audio.” This means that attempts to use Transcribe to Captions on content in other languages will simply not work.
This limitation mirrors that of Apple Intelligence, which, too, is currently only available in US English. Apple plans to introduce support for various English variants in next month’s macOS 15.2, which is available in beta now, while more languages including French, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish are set to be supported by April 2025.
It is anticipated that Final Cut Pro’s Transcribe to Captions feature will adhere to the same language support schedule as Apple Intelligence.
Additionally, Apple mentions that the AI-driven subtitle generation feature requires a Mac operating on macOS Sequoia, although Final Cut Pro itself is compatible with any Mac running macOS 14.6 or later.
The update for Final Cut Pro also introduced additional AI-driven features, such as Magnetic Mask, which allows editors to conveniently select and isolate individuals and objects within a video clip. This version also includes support for editing Spatial Video tailored for Apple Vision Pro.
Alongside Final Cut Pro, Apple has also updated Logic Pro and Final Cut Camera for iPhone, introducing new features for those applications as well.
Final Cut Pro for Mac can be purchased on the Mac App Store for $299, with a 90-day free trial available. The upgrade is complimentary for existing users. The iPad version is offered on the App Store but requires a subscription of $4.99 monthly or $49.99 annually, and it necessitates an iPad Air or iPad Pro equipped with an M1 chip or higher.
