Bluesky, a rising microblogging platform, has now officially achieved a significant milestone of 15 million registered users. Just a month prior, the platform had only 13 million users, showcasing its rapid growth as more individuals seek alternatives to X.
Bluesky continues to expand, yet remains significantly behind its competitors
This milestone was initially reported by Stats for Bluesky, a site that leverages the platform’s API to gather user data (via The Verge). Currently, Bluesky boasts over 15.2 million registered users. In comparison, it had only 2 million users in November 2023.
Despite its growth, Bluesky still trails behind major competitors, particularly X, which has over 500 million active users globally. Meta’s Threads also surpasses Bluesky with 275 million monthly active users and an influx of over a million new registrations daily. Nonetheless, Bluesky is increasingly capturing interest from users dissatisfied with X and Threads.
A recent incident in Brazil, which temporarily suspended X, prompted hundreds of thousands of Brazilian users to explore Bluesky. Furthermore, Elon Musk’s political engagement with Donald Trump has also driven more individuals to seek alternatives to X. Currently, Bluesky’s app is the most downloaded in the US App Store, closely followed by Threads.
Launched in 2021 as a “proof of concept” for the decentralized AT Protocol, Bluesky originated from an initiative supported by Twitter’s former CEO Jack Dorsey in 2019. After Elon Musk acquired Twitter, the platform shifted from being a project associated with X to a direct competitor.
Recently, Bluesky revealed plans to implement a paid subscription model with additional features, akin to X Premium (formerly known as Twitter Blue), while assuring users that the platform will not be placed behind a paywall.
