Final Cut Camera Now Supports Log-Encoded HEVC Video Capture

After the updates for Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro, Apple has also released an update for its Final Cut Camera app for iPhone. The latest version allows users to capture Log videos using the HEVC codec, along with the ability to preview Log videos with the Apple Log LUT and more. Continue reading for an overview of the new features in Final Cut Camera.

What’s new with Final Cut Camera for iPhone

A significant enhancement in Final Cut Camera is the introduction of Log-encoded HEVC video capture. Previously, Log was limited to ProRes videos, which require considerably more storage space. Now, users can take advantage of the flexibility and dynamic range that Log offers, combined with smaller HEVC file sizes.

Furthermore, the update brings the ability to enable LUT preview while recording in Log, allowing users to visualize the “vibrancy of the original scene” in SDR or HDR using the Apple Log LUT. For users with the iPhone 16 Pro, the update provides the option for 4K video capture at 120fps, perfect for cinematic slow-motion effects.

In addition, Apple has introduced advanced tilt and roll indicators to assist users in composing their shots effectively.

For those who are not familiar, Final Cut Camera is an Apple application that allows creators to “wirelessly connect and remotely direct each video angle using powerful professional controls.” Originally introduced as a companion tool for managing the iPhone camera via the iPad, it also functions independently as a standalone app on the iPhone.

Users of the app can modify settings such as white balance and manual focus, while also monitoring audio levels and zebra patterns. Additionally, the app offers controls for ISO and shutter speed, enabling easy transitions between resolutions and video formats. The user interface is intuitive and displays the iPhone’s battery level and available storage prominently.

With Final Cut Camera, transferring media to a Final Cut project on the iPad or saving footage directly to connected external storage is effortless. The app is available for download at no cost on the App Store and requires an iPhone with iOS 17.6 or later (with some features necessitating the latest iPhone models).
