Apple’s New ‘HomePad’: The Ultimate Home Device I’m Looking For

Apple is set to unveil a new home device at the beginning of next year, according to a detailed report by Mark Gurman. This yet-to-be-named ‘HomePad’ seems to be exactly what I’ve been looking for in a smart home gadget.

Home products have been a side venture for Apple

So far, Apple’s initiatives in the smart home domain have felt somewhat inadequate.

The company established HomeKit as a framework for home automation and supported the formation of Matter to create a more comprehensive cross-platform environment.

However, Apple has largely depended on third parties for the development of home automation devices.

HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K

The only notable exceptions have been the Apple TV 4K, HomePod, and HomePod mini.

However, these devices have often seemed more like ‘hobby’ projects from Apple.

While they receive some attention from the brand, it’s minimal, and none of them were positioned to transform home devices into a major revenue stream for Apple.

With the upcoming HomePad (the name I’m speculating), it appears Apple is ready to take home technology more seriously.

Key Features of the Upcoming HomePad

The HomePad seems poised to deliver flexibility and capabilities that other home devices currently lack.

If you’re looking for a brief overview of its features, Gurman’s post on X has the details:

  • Emphasis on Siri, Communication, and Home Control
  • Supports Safari, Music, Notes, and other Apple applications but lacks an App Store.
  • The device boasts touch functionality but will primarily be voice-operated through Apple Intelligence’s new App Intents feature.
  • Features a new OS merging elements of watchOS with iOS StandBy Mode, providing a dynamic UI that adjusts based on proximity.
  • Size comparable to two iPhones placed side by side, with an estimated 6-inch screen, featuring speakers, a FaceTime camera, and a rechargeable battery.
  • Apple is developing mounting options for walls, along with a speaker base for desks, tables, kitchens, and nightstands.
  • High security measures will be prioritized, alongside a video/audio intercom system for households with multiple Apple devices.
  • The home screen will be customizable with classic Apple widgets and home control functions.
  • Integration with video doorbells and security cameras, along with security notifications, will also be significant features.

It is evident that the HomePad will offer far more functionality than the current HomePod.

Reasons to Consider Multiple HomePads

Home Security Camera

Gurman mentions that Apple “hopes to market multiple units to consumers, who will distribute them throughout their homes and engage with them on a daily basis.”

Personally, the prospect of purchasing several HomePads appeals to me, primarily for their security capabilities, as it appears the integrated camera will function like a HomeKit security system. I’d love to have cameras situated in multiple rooms, but have never committed to the expense.

The HomePad offers a compelling reason to invest in this technology, as it promises to deliver more than just visual surveillance.

I’m also excited about the concept of having StandBy-style widgets and continuous Photos slideshows displayed on multiple screens around my home. Randomly seeing cherished memories would be an easily enjoyable feature.

iPhone StandBy Mode

Moreover, I should highlight the HomePod-like feature of communicating with Siri from any part of the house. Given that the HomePad integrates Apple Intelligence, the built-in Siri will be significantly more effective than the current functionality found on the HomePod.

One minor apprehension I have is regarding the HomePad’s screen size, which seems rather compact. However, I believe Apple conducted extensive research on screen dimensions before finalizing their design. Therefore, this should not be a concern, especially if I place a device in every room.

In summary, while Apple envisioned HomePods in every household space, the HomePad appears poised to genuinely offer sufficient value to make that a reality, ideally at a price point that encourages multiple purchases.
