According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple is gearing up for the launch of AirTag 2 in the “middle of next year.” While the design won’t stray far from the original, enhancements will be made in three significant areas.
This isn’t the first instance of AirTag 2 being mentioned, but it’s the first time we are getting a detailed insight into Apple’s intentions.
Apple first introduced AirTag in early 2021 after a lengthy period of leaks that left many wondering if the product would ever materialize. Back in 2019, we learned about its B389 codename, supported by multiple references in iOS 13.
The upcoming AirTag model is designated B589, and Bloomberg reports it has made progress in manufacturing tests. This suggests it will soon be available in the market, boasting three notable upgrades:
- Extended range
- Enhanced wireless chip
- Stronger privacy features
The enhancements in range and wireless technology are expected improvements. It’s encouraging to see Apple prioritizing privacy as well.
Gurman points out that some individuals have used the device for inappropriate purposes, with a few even altering AirTags to mute the speaker. It is hoped that Apple will directly address these issues in the new version.
