Apple Might Soon Phase Out the Lightning to Headphone Jack Adapter

Launched in 2016, the Apple Lightning to 3.5mm headphone jack adapter might be nearing its discontinuation (as reported by MacRumors).

This accessory was introduced alongside the iPhone 7, Apple’s first model to omit the 3.5mm headphone jack. To use wired headphones, apart from the Lightning EarPods included in the packaging, customers needed this adapter.

Initially, Apple packaged it with the iPhone 7, 8, and X, but starting with the iPhone XS and XR, it was removed from the box, making it necessary for customers to purchase it separately for $9.

Today’s iPhones utilize USB-C connectors, and Apple continues to manufacture a USB-C to headphone jack adapter compatible with the iPhone 15 and newer models. However, for users with iPhone 14 or earlier, the availability window may be closing.

At present, this adapter is marked “sold out” on Apple’s online store, which may not definitively indicate its discontinuation, but it is a significant warning sign. According to MacRumors, a similar scenario occurred with Apple’s USB SuperDrive, which sold out before its silent discontinuation.

While it is out of stock on Apple’s website in the US and most other countries, it remains available in France, Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden.

There will likely be MFi-certified alternatives available, but if you’re looking specifically for Apple’s version—act quickly. Although Amazon shows it as out of stock, it can still be purchased from Best Buy at a slight discount from the original $9 price point.
