Apple Addresses Disappearing Notes Problem After iCloud Terms Update

Earlier this month, we highlighted a concerning bug affecting Apple Notes users and provided a straightforward workaround. Now, Apple has recognized the issue officially and shared the solution in a new support document.

Updated support document details Notes app fix

Apple periodically prompts users to agree to a new set of terms and conditions through a device notification.

This occurred a couple of weeks ago regarding iCloud terms. While some users faced no issues after accepting the terms, others found their Apple Notes app had lost access to all iCloud-based notes.

Fortunately, this bug didn’t lead to actual data loss. Instead, it merely turned off a switch that ensures iCloud is active in the Notes app.

Apple has released a new support document that outlines how to resolve the issue:

  1. Open the Settings app and tap your name.
  2. Select iCloud, then choose Notes.
  3. Ensure that the Sync this [device] option is enabled, then check your Notes app.
  4. If your notes are still missing, try restarting your iPhone, iPad, or Apple Vision Pro. After rebooting, revisit your settings.

DMN’s Perspective

The instructions are nearly the same as those my colleague Ben shared earlier this month.

The only new detail is that if enabling iCloud sync for Notes on your device doesn’t resolve the issue instantly, a device restart should help.

As a frequent user of Apple Notes, I personally wasn’t affected by this bug, but I can understand how alarming it would be to open the Notes app and see nothing. I’m relieved that no real data loss occurred and that the solution is so straightforward.
