The iPhone 17 Air Might Share Many Features with the iPhone SE

The latest insights regarding the iPhone 17 Air indicate that this anticipated ultra-slim model could potentially reach a thickness of just 6mm, making it the thinnest iPhone to date.

While reaching this benchmark could be quite difficult, and we’ll reserve judgment until we have more substantiating evidence, there is certainly an increasing understanding of the demographic that Apple aims to attract with this device.

Interestingly, the model that could emerge as Apple’s most costly offering next year might share significant market appeal with the most affordable one.

The iPhone SE

The original iPhone SE occupied a unique niche in Apple’s lineup. The company’s main focus was affordability, creating a budget-friendly entry into the iPhone experience.

However, some purchasers were attracted not primarily by the cost, but rather by its compact size and timeless design. In fact, I personally ‘downgraded’ from the iPhone 6S to the SE for those exact reasons.

The SE has also appealed to those who wish to join the Apple ecosystem while prioritizing simplicity over technical power, particularly for those who aren’t very interested in advanced camera features.

While they do want the ability to take pictures, their priority is a straightforward point-and-shoot experience. They prefer pressing a button to capture a moment rather than navigating lens options or settings.

Next year’s rendition of the iPhone SE is anticipated to be a notable upgrade. This new model will finally eliminate the Home button in favor of the nearly all-screen design seen in other iPhones. It will transition from Lightning to USB-C and will integrate Apple Intelligence.

Despite these enhancements, it is still expected to maintain a single camera.

The iPhone 17 Air

The iPhone 17 Air may turn out to be the most expensive model in the lineup, even surpassing the iPhone 17 Pro Max in price.

Curiously, it is projected to share a key trait with the most economical iPhone: a single camera.

It appears that Apple is primarily aiming at the ‘style over substance’ demographic with this forthcoming release. It is designed for consumers who desire the prestige associated with owning the sleekest iPhone available and are willing to invest extra for that experience.

From my viewpoint, sacrificing photographic capabilities for a sleeker design is not a trade-off I would make, as enhanced camera features are usually my main reason for upgrading annually.

Nevertheless, the intended audience for the iPhone 17 Air might actually view the single camera as a positive aspect. By replacing the cluttered aesthetic of a bulky camera module with three lenses for a minimalist single lens (potentially centered rather than off-center), they benefit from a simpler user experience—no more complicated decisions, just point and shoot.

It seems that Apple’s most affordable and most premium iPhones next year may attract a similar demographic for similar reasons.
