One of the major challenges with social media platforms is that our feeds often reflect the preferences the algorithms assume we have, rather than what we genuinely desire to view.
If you find that your Instagram recommendations are straying further from your true interests, Meta is now providing an opportunity to reset everything from scratch…
Instagram offers not just one, but three distinct sets of recommendations for each user:
The company has announced that it will allow everyone to reset each of these recommendation categories, enabling a fresh start.
We’ve begun testing a feature that allows all Instagram users – including teenagers – to reset their recommendations. In just a few taps, you’ll be able to clear your suggested content across Explore, Reels, and Feed, giving you a fresh slate.
Your recommendations will gradually begin to personalize again as you interact with new content and accounts. During the reset process, you’ll also have the chance to review your following list and unfollow any accounts that provide content you no longer wish to see.
This feature is currently considered a test but will eventually be accessible to all users globally, although the deployment may take some time.
The company has also highlighted additional methods to manage your feeds.
For instance, users can express their interest in the content they see on their Explore page by tapping the three dots in the post’s corner and choosing “Interested.” We recently introduced a new feature for teenagers in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia, allowing them to select topics of interest – ranging from books and travel to cooking and sports. Users can also indicate content they wish to exclude by selecting “Not interested” from the three-dot menu, or utilize our Hidden Words feature to block content containing specific words or phrases in captions.
We offer a variety of tools to help teens tailor their Instagram experience, beyond just recommendations. Teens can switch to a Following Feed to view posts in chronological order from accounts they follow, with the newest posts appearing first. Alternatively, they can create a Favorites list to see more content from selected accounts prioritized in their Feed, along with a dedicated feed for quickly catching up on their favorite posts.
If the focus on teenagers appears significant, it is intentional. Meta has faced ongoing scrutiny for intentionally making its platforms addictive to younger audiences, as well as the detrimental impact it has had on their mental health through promoting unrealistic beauty standards.
