Over 200 Leading Companies Have Already Embraced Passkeys

The shift towards a password-free future is accelerating, with over 200 companies now integrating passkey support into their platforms. This important development, highlighted by 1Password, indicates a significant trend toward enhanced security and more user-friendly authentication solutions.

1Password reveals insights on passkey adoption; leading companies are embracing them

The number of businesses adopting passkeys has surged since last year, now featuring major brands like Walmart, Amazon, Target, Playstation, Discord, and Canva. For 1Password, this diverse array of adopters underscores the broad applicability and attractiveness of passkey technology across different sectors.

In case you’re not aware, passkeys were launched two years ago as a replacement for standard passwords, utilizing either a security key or biometric data for more secure authentication. The FIDO Alliance, in conjunction with tech giants like Apple, Google, and Microsoft, developed this technology.

As a proud member of the FIDO Alliance, 1Password has also shared insightful statistics on how its users are embracing passkeys.

To date, over 4.2 million passkeys have been securely stored within 1Password, with an average of 2.1 million passkey authentications occurring each month. Approximately 1 in every 3.4 users of 1Password has at least one passkey saved, and 73% of those with passkeys represent consumer accounts.

These adoption statistics aren’t just a significant achievement for 1Password as pioneers in the passwordless movement. They reflect the confidence our customers have in 1Password to deliver secure and dependable passkey solutions.

As part of the FIDO Alliance, we are dedicated to helping a greater number of users and enterprises move beyond passwords and welcome a safer, more straightforward future without them.

Earlier this year, 1Password launched a new “Passkey Ready” tool designed to assist web developers in assessing whether users can transition from traditional passwords to passkeys seamlessly.

The FIDO Alliance has recently introduced new specifications for passkeys, enabling easier import and export of keys among various password managers. On the iOS front, this functionality has been available in Safari since iOS 16 and has extended to third-party applications with the release of iOS 17.

More information regarding the uptake of passkeys can be found on the 1Password website.
