The recently released M4 MacBook Pros come with several appealing quality-of-life improvements; however, their exterior design remains largely unchanged, aside from the addition of a Thunderbolt port in the M4 model, which the M3 Pro and M3 Max already featured.
This consistency extends to the internal components as well, showing no significant alterations compared to the M3 series.
iFixit released a teardown of the M4 Pro MacBook Pro on YouTube, noting that the “internal components of the device are quite recognizable.”
When comparing it to the M3 Pro MacBook Pro, iFixit observed a marginally larger heatsink designed to manage the increased power output of the M4 Pro chip, along with a few smaller integrated circuits that have shifted locations on the circuit board. Aside from these minor adjustments, the overall layout remains the same, including the dual-fan system and identical battery capacity.
Earlier this year, with the introduction of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, Apple implemented a more streamlined process for battery removal on iPhones, allowing for safer battery replacements with reduced risk of puncture-related fires.
Unfortunately, the new M4 MacBook Pros do not incorporate this updated battery replacement system. It is hoped that future models will feature an improved method for battery management. A redesign of the MacBook Pro is anticipated in 2026.
