Fortunately for Apple, engineers appear to have resolved some issues, paving the way for the realization of the company’s 5G modem. Several reports, including those from DMN, indicate that Apple is planning to release its first devices featuring its modem next year.
Recent reports revealed that Apple has developed a promising modem codenamed “V59” or “Centauri,” which can support not just 5G, but also Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS. Sources suggest that this modem will significantly reduce battery usage, particularly in Low Power Mode.
The iPhone SE 4 is expected to be the first device to incorporate Apple’s 5G modem, likely announced in the first half of 2025. By the close of next year, at least one model of the iPhone 17, most probably the iPhone 17 Air, will also feature the new modem. Despite the advantages in battery efficiency, Apple remains hesitant to include its modem in premium products like the Pro iPhones.
A recent disclosure from The Information indicated that Apple’s current 5G modem prototypes still fall short of matching Qualcomm’s 5G chipset in performance. Furthermore, these prototypes do not support the ultra-fast 5G mmWave.
