These Two Apple Products Are Popular Gifts, While Two Others Miss the Holiday Surge

The festive season is here, and Apple promotes its products as ideal gifts for friends and family. However, a recent CIRP report sheds light on which Apple products are frequently gifted and which ones don’t receive a holiday uplift.

Apple Watch and iPad are popular holiday gifts

CIRP conducted a year-long survey of Apple product owners to determine whether they received their devices as gifts.

This approach helped identify which Apple products enjoy considerable gifting during the holiday season and which don’t.

It’s worth noting that CIRP concentrated solely on primary Apple products such as the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch, excluding accessories like AirPods, which are undoubtedly popular during this time.

Nonetheless, two devices stood out as favorites among gift-givers.

  • The Apple Watch was gifted to 9% of participants during the holiday quarter, in comparison to a typical 2% receiving it as a gift throughout the rest of the year.
  • The iPad saw a holiday gift rate of 6%, up from its usual 2%.

iPhone and Mac are seldom gifted

What about the iPhone, Apple’s most popular device?

It appears that iPhones are rarely given as gifts—whether during the holiday season or at any other time.

Almost 0% of respondents indicated that they received an iPhone as a gift, and this trend remained consistent throughout the year.

This doesn’t come as a surprise, as purchasing a new iPhone is a significant expense, often requiring monthly installment payments, akin to giving someone a car while placing them under future financial obligations.

The Mac also performed poorly as a holiday gift. Only about 1% of participants reported receiving a Mac as a gift during the holidays, showing only a small increase from the rest of the year.

Thus, one could interpret this data as indicating that Apple’s lower-cost offerings, the Apple Watch and iPad, are favored as gifts, while the pricier options, iPhone and Mac, do not quite measure up.

Whether you’re preparing a shopping list or hoping for specific gifts this season, this report may serve as a useful guide for your purchases and requests. Or at least help you rationalize not gifting a new iPhone to a loved one.
