In the last quarter, the three leading smartphones sold worldwide were all from last year’s iPhone lineup, with older Samsung models placing 4th and 5th, according to a recent market intelligence study.
The iPhone 15, base model, took the top spot among smartphone sales in Q4 2024, accounting for 3% of the global smartphone market.
According to Counterpoint Research, the iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 15 Pro secured the second and third positions, respectively.

The research firm does not disclose shipment figures – this data is available only to paying clients – but notes that the Pro Max performed particularly well.
The gap between the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the iPhone 15 has narrowed compared to last year as consumers preferred better camera and display options, supported by easier financing and trade-in opportunities.
Overall, Apple experienced a minor decline, influenced by stronger sales from Samsung devices.
It’s common for previous year’s models to lead Q3 sales due to the limited period in which new models are sold during that quarter. Additionally, in many markets, consumers often strike a balance between features and cost by opting for last year’s models.
