Initially, Meta designed its Threads microblogging service with the intention of integrating with the fediverse. This integration has been gradually implemented, and a significant update is on the horizon. Users of Threads can now follow accounts from various fediverse platforms, though some restrictions still apply.
Threads’ integration with the fediverse is improving
Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri announced on Wednesday that a new Threads update is being released which enhances fediverse integration even more. Now, Threads users have the ability to follow accounts from other fediverse networks, allowing them to view those accounts’ posts directly in their timeline. Users can also turn on notifications for these fediverse accounts.
This marks a significant advancement from the prior integration, which only enabled users to share their Threads posts within the fediverse and view replies and likes from fediverse users on their own posts.
However, there is a limitation: users can only follow fediverse accounts that have previously engaged with them on their Threads posts. As of now, searching for fediverse profiles is not an option, although Meta plans to introduce this functionality in the future. Currently, users cannot reply to fediverse posts through Threads either. Nonetheless, this is a positive development for those invested in the fediverse concept.
Recently, Meta has been noticeably accelerating the introduction of new features for Threads, which coincides with the significant growth of its competitor, Bluesky.
Last month, Meta began testing a feature allowing Threads users to select their preferred default feed. The app has also received updates that enable users to play full-screen videos in landscape mode and the ability to create Custom Feeds tailored to their interests.
Threads is offered at no cost on the App Store. Ensure you have the latest version of the app installed to access all new features.
