Apple’s Passwords App Introduces a Firefox Extension for Mac Users

This autumn, Apple unveiled a new Passwords app designed as a central hub for managing passwords across all devices. While browser support for built-in Passwords has varied, one major browser has recently added support: Apple’s official Passwords extension is now available for Firefox on Mac.

Firefox extension enhances the Passwords experience

For many years, Apple has provided the iCloud Keychain feature for storing and managing passwords through the Settings app on its devices.

This fall, Apple introduced a dedicated Passwords app in iOS 18, macOS Sequoia, visionOS 2, and more, aiming to make Passwords accessible whenever needed.

However, for Firefox users, the experience was somewhat inconvenient. While you could access the Passwords app on macOS and through its Menu Bar app, there was no seamless integration with Firefox.

That has officially changed with the introduction of an ‘iCloud Passwords’ extension for Firefox users on Mac. Here is a summary of its features:

iCloud Passwords allows you to securely fill in passwords from iCloud Keychain when signing into websites via Firefox. Any new passwords you create in Firefox will be saved to your iCloud Keychain, making them available across Apple devices. The extension can also generate verification codes, which you can set up by right-clicking on a QR code.

Interestingly, a discussion on Reddit indicates that this extension was developed by a third-party creator prior to Apple’s involvement. It appears that Apple has recently taken over the extension, now branding it as their own and publishing it with their name.

Currently, there is no compatible version for Windows, but it is hoped that one will be released in the future.

Regardless, having direct access to your stored passwords within Firefox will greatly enhance the browsing experience.
