Report: 2026 iPhone to Focus on AI Enhancements with Redesigned RAM Configuration

Apple continuously develops new iPhones that are years ahead, and a recent report sheds light on a significant internal adjustment planned for the iPhone 18 lineup expected in 2026.

Apple transitioning to discrete RAM in iPhones to enhance on-device AI

The iPhone 16 has been described as the first model “designed specifically” for AI. However, it’s no surprise that upcoming iPhones are set to implement even more adaptations in preparation for an AI-centric future.

Samsung has begun researching modifications to the packaging approach for low-power double data rate DRAM utilized in iPhones. The South Korean technology leader’s initiative to alter the integrated circuit (IC) of the LPDDR to a discrete package is per Apple’s request, sources indicate. This implies the LPDDR will be housed separately (i.e., discretely) from the main system semiconductor. Cupertino aims to implement this change starting in 2026… The shift to discrete packaging is intended to enhance the memory bandwidth for on-device AI.

Traditionally, Apple has employed PoP (package-on-package) configurations for RAM in its iPhones, which involves stacking the memory on top of the primary system chip.

This method offers various benefits, but as The Elec points out, it may not be the most effective configuration for on-device AI.

PoP is not optimal for on-device AI. Bandwidth relies on data transfer speed, data bus width, and transmission channels. The bus width and channels depend on the I/O pin counts. To increase the number of pins, the package must grow larger. However, in PoP, the memory size is dictated by the SoC, which restricts the I/O pin count on the package.

Discrete packages also offer improved heat management. The parallel processing of on-device AI generates considerable heat. A larger memory surface area allows for better heat dissipation across a wider area.

Apple has previously used discrete packaging for its Macs and iPads, but since the shift to Apple silicon with the M1, it has also adopted PoP setups there. It’s possible that this modification for the iPhone might extend to the Mac and iPad as well.

This report strongly suggests that Apple anticipates significant demands on RAM for future iPhones, driven by the development of on-device AI capabilities.

While Apple Intelligence has just recently launched, it’s evident that AI will play a central role in the future of technology. Any software updates Apple is currently working on for 2026’s iPhone 18 will need to be supported by the necessary hardware.
