The iPhone 17 Air is generating excitement with its latest detailed specifications leaks. The recent updates provide valuable insights into how much thinner the upcoming device is expected to be.
New Insights on Next Year’s iPhone 17 Air
Apple is rapidly redesigning its devices to be more streamlined, and the iPhone is next on the list.
The year 2024 marked significant advancements in this strategy, with the M4 iPad Pro being launched in May as Apple’s slimmest device yet, followed by the Apple Watch Series 10 in September, which boasted a notable reduction in thickness.
However, this year’s iPhone lineup didn’t feature these dramatic changes. That will soon change, at least for one model next year.
The iPhone 17 Air promises a profoundly ultra-thin design. While it may not include the highest-end specifications, it will certainly signal the future direction of iPhone design.
According to a Bloomberg article covering Apple’s proprietary modem projects, Mark Gurman provided intriguing new details about the iPhone 17 Air’s features.
This device is set to be the thinnest smartphone from Apple and demonstrates the immense investment the company has made to shift away from Qualcomm… By utilizing its own modem, Apple can produce a smartphone that is approximately 2 millimeters slimmer than the iPhone 16 Pro.
For context, here are the dimensions of Apple’s current flagship phones:
- iPhone 16: 7.8mm
- iPhone 16 Plus: 7.8mm
- iPhone 16 Pro: 8.25mm
- iPhone 16 Pro Max: 8.25mm
Significant Thickness Reduction: 25%
A 2mm decrease relative to the iPhone 16 Pro translates to around a 25% reduction in thickness overall, slightly exceeding 25% when compared to the Pro models and slightly less for the standard versions.
This aligns with previous anticipations of a device that could measure close to 6mm in thickness.
The slimmest iPhone to date is the iPhone 6, which measures in at 6.9mm. The 17 Air is poised to surpass that without a doubt.
Since most of us don’t often think in millimeters, it’s easier to visualize the impact of a 25% thickness reduction.
Looking at my iPhone 16 Pro, reducing the thickness by 25% would significantly change its appearance, especially around the area surrounding the buttons.
While the iPhone 17 Air might not appeal to those who typically opt for Pro versions due to its limitations, it undeniably represents an exciting new entry in the lineup.
