Unlike other first-party applications that do not feature Dynamic Color theming, Google Maps has predominantly utilized a blue accent for various buttons and interface elements, but this is set to transition to teal.
Update 12/12: The teal accent is now visible on iOS (version 24.49.3), with a prompt stating “Google Maps has a new look,” highlighting that it’s the “Same great app, now with fresher colors.” It’s intriguing that Google felt the need to introduce this change with a message.
Update 12/10: The teal accent color is being rolled out more broadly in Google Maps for Android. You can see the transition from blue to teal in the floating action button (FAB), and the currently selected tab has also shifted from blue to black.
Old vs. new
The darker shade of teal is utilized in carousels like Directions, while other elements feature a lighter hue.
Google has also refreshed the blue icons across listings. After force-stopping Google Maps (via App info), we observe this change in version 24.49.06.x (both stable and beta).
Original 11/13: Users are beginning to notice a teal accent color applied to the bottom bar and icons like directions and location within Google Maps. Recent screenshots from Google Maps announcements have showcased this updated hue.
The teal accent can also be prominently observed when browsing listings, with updates made to buttons like Directions and Start in the carousel.
Old vs. new
It remains unclear why Google opted for this more subtle hue that diverges from the company’s traditional blue, red, yellow, and bright green palette. We have contacted the company for additional insights. Meanwhile, Google Maps still does not implement Dynamic Color on Android.
This server-side update has not yet been widely disseminated on Android or iOS, following the new color palette for the map layer introduced approximately a year ago.
These adjustments follow other recent design changes, which include repositioning the corner weather widget to the bottom sheet, in addition to simplifying the bottom bar to feature only three tabs.
