Welcome to Rumor Replay, a weekly feature at DMN where we summarize the latest rumors surrounding Apple products, complete with my insights and commentary. Today, we’ll explore new home devices, cellular Macs, gaming controllers for the Vision Pro, and more. Here’s what’s buzzing in the Apple rumor mill this week.
Upcoming Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini in 2025
According to Mark Gurman, Apple is set to unveil updates to both the Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini in 2025.
The report did not provide specific details beyond the expected release timeline; however, it’s exciting to know that Apple’s home devices, which seldom see updates, will get new iterations.
I am particularly interested in how these new devices will integrate with the forthcoming ‘HomePad’ to establish a comprehensive home ecosystem. Initially, I was concerned that the HomePod might be phased out, but it appears Apple has bigger plans for it.
Cellular Macs and Vision Pro are on the horizon
Reports indicate that Apple is exploring the possibility of integrating its new proprietary 5G chip into future Macs and the Vision Pro.
I have long wished for Apple’s in-house 5G modem to coincide with the entry of cellular capabilities into the Mac lineup, and it seems that might finally come to fruition.
Having cellular connectivity on the Mac feels overdue, especially since it’s a feature I greatly appreciate on the iPad Pro. If Apple does indeed introduce cellular Macs, I will need to reconsider my choices regarding my primary computer.
Genuine VR game controllers for Vision Pro
Although Apple has largely overlooked gaming on the Vision Pro, it appears that support for PlayStation VR2 handheld controllers may soon be added to visionOS.
It’s encouraging to see Apple recognizing the need to invest in the gaming potential of Vision Pro. However, I am somewhat concerned that the company may think this collaboration with Sony will be sufficient to meet gamers’ needs, which it won’t.
For a truly compelling gaming experience on Vision Pro, Apple needs to develop a more comprehensive gaming strategy, and while integrating PlayStation VR2 controllers is a step in the right direction, I hope to see more innovative solutions in the works.
Saying goodbye to the MacBook notch
According to an Omdia report, the anticipated 2026 MacBook Pro will feature an OLED display that excludes the notch.
The notch was never particularly appealing, so I welcome Apple’s decision to remove it from the Mac soon. Expect to see a similar move for the MacBook Air, although that might be a year or two later since an OLED upgrade for the Air isn’t expected in the immediate future.
Focusing on the chips
Many rumors circulating this week revolved around the new chips that Apple is developing:
These developments are intriguing not only for the chips themselves but also for the enhancements they may bring to Apple’s product lineup.
I’m particularly curious about how Apple’s upcoming Wi-Fi chip could lead to a new Wi-Fi router as well.
