Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman has reported today that Apple is developing a new HomePod mini slated for next year. The report notably highlights a new wireless chip, but my primary wish is for Apple to include Apple Intelligence support in their upcoming HomePod models.
HomePod and Apple Intelligence
I have multiple HomePods throughout my home, and while they prove to be quite handy with their AirPlay and Apple TV integration, the experience with Siri often leaves much to be desired. Beyond setting timers, Siri tends to misunderstand commands frequently, especially for playing music or podcasts — the core functionality of a HomePod.
This week, Apple rolled out iOS 18.2 to the public, confirming an essential yet subtle update for Apple Music. It will now incorporate natural language search to better comprehend users’ queries. This enhancement processes requests online via Apple’s servers, making it available for Siri on the HomePod as well.
This improvement should significantly enhance the experience of using Siri on the HomePod for changing tracks, but it still falls short of what is needed. Apple has assured us of a revamped Siri that will understand your personal context, with this capability arriving next year for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. However, the essence of HomePod relies on Siri, and it, too, should benefit from this advancement.
The device would gain immense value if I could pose questions about my day even in the absence of my iPhone.
Currently, HomePods utilize the same system on chips (SoCs) found in Apple Watches, limiting their ability to support Apple Intelligence. Rumors suggest that Apple is developing a “HomePad” equipped with a large display and a chip capable of handling AI functionalities. Nonetheless, I anticipate Apple to introduce a more powerful chip to the standard HomePods as well.
But what about you? Do you believe integrating Apple Intelligence into the HomePod would be transformative? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
