WSJ: Foldable iPhone Expected by 2026; iPhone 17 Air to Be More Affordable Than Pro Models

A recent article from The Wall Street Journal reveals that Apple is developing two new foldable devices aimed for release in 2026 and later. The report also sheds light on the anticipated ultra-slim iPhone 17 model.

Details on the iPhone 17 Air

The Wall Street Journal has confirmed several important details about the iPhone 17 Air, describing it as a “strategy to stimulate growth” following several years of minor updates. Here’s what to expect:

Starting next year, Apple aims to launch an iPhone with a profile thinner than the current models’ 8-millimeter design. This model will be priced lower than the Pro versions, achieved by implementing a simplified camera system to cut costs.

Initially, there were expectations that the iPhone 17 Air would be Apple’s priciest iPhone, surpassing the cost of the iPhone 17 Pro Max. However, The Wall Street Journal now counters that claim, indicating it will be more affordable than the Pro variants.

Presently, the iPhone 16 Pro starts at $999, suggesting that the iPhone 17 Air might begin around the ~$900 range, similar to the iPhone 16 Plus that it is intended to replace.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the iPhone 17 Air will “serve as an alternative” for consumers seeking a sleeker device without minding some trade-offs. Apple is heavily investing in the appeal of the ultra-thin design.

Introducing New Foldable Devices

In addition, we anticipate the introduction of two new foldable devices: a foldable iPhone and a larger device designed to function as a laptop. This larger device is projected to feature a 19-inch display when fully opened, aligning with earlier reports from Bloomberg. Initially, this device was slated to launch first, but it appears the foldable iPhone is taking precedence.

The report specifies that the foldable iPhone will “unfold to a display size larger than an iPhone 16 Pro Max,” indicating a display size of at least 7 inches, as the iPhone 16 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch display.

While Apple initially experimented with external displays that would fold outward, the company is now leaning towards an inward-folding design, akin to other existing devices. The development of these devices has been ongoing for some time, but the company faced challenges related to the hinge and display cover—leading to delays.

Apple executives are advocating for a 2026 release for the foldable iPhone, although the company may require additional time to refine the product.
