Apple Sports App Introduces Four New Features, Including Live Activity Scheduling

This year marked the launch of Apple Sports, a specialized application for iPhone users to monitor sports events. The app has seen consistent updates throughout the year, with the latest version released today introducing four significant features.

Four new features in the latest Apple Sports update

Today, Apple rolled out version 2.3 of Apple Sports, which may be the final major update of the year. It is a particularly impressive enhancement.

Below are the release notes provided by Apple for this update:

  • League standings have been updated to show which teams have qualified for the playoffs and which teams have been eliminated.
  • Stay updated with scoring and key events in a game using the new Key Plays feature available in the Play-By-Play tab.
  • Soccer and baseball game pages now feature pregame lineups when applicable.
  • You can schedule a Live Activity for any game on the Today tab, enabling a real-time scorecard on your Lock Screen as the game progresses.

While these additions may not be revolutionary, each enhances the experience for sports enthusiasts, making the Apple Sports app more functional than ever.

DMN’s Take

I particularly appreciate the Live Activity scheduling option. The ability to open the app at any time and plan in advance which games I’ll follow through Live Activities is a valuable improvement.

The other updates are quite beneficial as well. Fans often want to know if their team has advanced to the postseason or has been eliminated, and Key Plays seems like an excellent way to quickly grasp important game moments when trying to catch up.

I wonder if the Key Plays feature is related to the Catch Up feature in the Apple TV app that was introduced recently. It wouldn’t be surprising if both applications utilize the same core data.
