Apple Intelligence made its debut this June to significant enthusiasm, and it’s now finally accessible through iOS 18.1 and iOS 18.2. However, at least one initial report suggests it isn’t a groundbreaking change. Here’s why that wasn’t expected, and why it’s certainly not a final conclusion.
Initial Impact of Apple Intelligence Proves Disappointing
A recent survey indicates that most iPhone users believe Apple Intelligence contributes ‘little to no value’ to their smartphone experience.
Nonetheless, it’s crucial to note that this survey was conducted prior to the introduction of new AI functionalities in iOS 18.2.
That said, I’m not taken aback. Why is that?
Because Apple Intelligence is intentionally designed to deliver gradual improvements that accumulate over time.
New Major Product vs. Incremental Product Enhancer
When considering the majority of AI advancements from other firms, you might envision standalone AI products.
For instance, products like ChatGPT and Gemini, or AI-enhanced smart glasses and wearables.
Most companies aim to develop a ‘groundbreaking new product’ utilizing AI. That differs from Apple’s approach or intentions.
Apple Intelligence is an enhancement to existing products rather than a completely new entity. Think of it as an ‘incremental product enhancer.’
Here are a few instances:
- Apple’s Photos app had several editing options, and it’s now added Clean Up. Its search function is further improved with AI enhancements.
- Messages included emojis, and you can now also create custom Genmojis.
- Spellcheck and autocorrect have always been part of Apple’s systemwide keyboards, and now AI writing tools are included too.
- Notifications are a significant aspect of our interaction with devices and are now (mostly) improved through summarization.
Individually, these features might not be revolutionary. However, their cumulative effect will increase over time.
Apple Intelligence Will Transform Your Device Usage, Whether You Realize It or Not
Due to its integration within existing applications and functionalities, Apple Intelligence is inevitably going to modify our device interactions.
There isn’t a single standout feature that will revolutionize everything.
However, a multitude of smaller features, with more arriving in the future, will consistently improve and reshape our devices for years ahead.
The reality is, we may not even notice what aspects incorporate AI over time. We’ll simply engage with various features on our iPhone, iPad, or Mac and reap the benefits.
We remain at the beginning of Apple Intelligence, yet its ongoing influence will be undeniable, as it becomes increasingly intertwined with the fundamental operations of our daily devices.
