Gemini App Update for iPhone Introduces Model Picker for 2.0 Flash

After updating Android, Google is now releasing an update for the Gemini app on iPhone, allowing users to select the 2.0 Flash Experimental feature.

With last week’s announcement, the Gemini app now includes a model selection option at the top of the interface. The available choices are:

  • 1.5 Pro: Handle complex tasks
  • 1.5 Flash: Obtain daily assistance
  • 2.0 Flash Experimental: Try out our latest experimental model

The Gemini 2.0 Flash Experimental model may not function as intended, and file upload is currently unavailable. This new model reportedly “surpasses 1.5 Pro in key benchmarks” and operates at double the speed. For app users, Google asserts that it will provide an “even more efficient Gemini assistant.” The model is anticipated to become generally available in January, with the advanced Deep Research feature expected to roll out in early 2025 after its launch on desktop and mobile web.

In addition to the 2.0 Flash feature, the changelog for version 1.2024.4970016 of Google Gemini for iPhone mentions two new Extensions:

  • Manage your smart home using the new Google Home extension
  • Direct access to your photos through the Google Photos extension

You may need to enroll in the Google Home Public Preview program to access the first extension, and the “Google Photos” extension is not yet visible. However, image uploads for analysis are already enabled.

Google has also introduced “Saved info” — gemini.google.com/saved-info — in the account menu, while non-Gemini Advanced users will see a selection of conversation starters above the text input field.

Lastly, there is improved language support:

  • The app is now accessible in 11 additional languages: Bulgarian, Estonian, Gujarati, Kannada, Latvian, Lithuanian, Malayalam, Serbian, Slovenian, Swahili, and Urdu
  • Gemini Live is available in 21 new languages: Bengali, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, Gujarati, Hungarian, Kannada, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Malayalam, Marathi, Norwegian Bokmal, Romanian, Slovenian, Swahili, Swedish, Tamil, Telugu, Ukrainian, and Urdu
