On Thursday, Apple ceased signing iOS 18.1.1, which means users cannot downgrade to this version if their iPhone or iPad is already operating on a newer build. This decision follows the release of iOS 18.2 just a week prior, which introduced a range of new features and enhancements.
Apple restricts downgrade from iOS 18.2 to iOS 18.1.1
As iOS 18.1.1 is no longer signed, users of iPhones and iPads are unable to revert to this operating system version. Released on November 19, iOS 18.1.1 included vital security updates.
iOS 18.2, which rolled out on December 11, brought forth a variety of new features such as Image Playground, Genmoji, and integration of ChatGPT with Siri, as well as enhancements to Camera Control and Mail Categorization. In addition, this update also delivered numerous security fixes, including one that blocks malicious applications from accessing users’ private data.
Apple’s action to stop signing iOS 18.1.1 reflects its dedication to user security. By promoting updates to the latest software, Apple seeks to safeguard devices against potential threats.
This inability to downgrade is particularly impactful for the jailbreaking community, which frequently relies on older iOS versions for their activities. While some users may find this limitation frustrating, Apple’s strategy of discontinuing support for previous iOS versions is a well-established approach aimed at preserving the security of its platform.
Users are strongly encouraged to update their devices to iOS 18.2 to benefit from the latest security patches and feature enhancements, which can be done via the Settings app under General > Software Update.
It’s important to highlight that Apple continues to offer security updates for devices running iOS 17, without the requirement to upgrade to iOS 18. However, once a device is upgraded to iOS 18, reverting back to iOS 17 is no longer an option. If you are using the iOS 18.3 beta, the only downgrade option available is to iOS 18.2.
