Apple Reaffirms Commitment to World AIDS Day with $5 Donation for Every Purchase

Apple is once again participating in World Aids Day on December 1st and will donate $5 for each eligible purchase made between November 29 and December 8.

Update: The company has set a donation limit of $3 million, and (RED) confirmed via Twitter that Apple reached this cap and contributed the full amount …

This marks the 18th consecutive year that Apple has supported The Global Fund, an organization dedicated to combating HIV, tuberculosis (TB), and malaria.

The Global Fund

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, founded in 2002, is credited with saving 65 million lives to date.

The Global Fund is a global partnership aimed at eradicating HIV, tuberculosis (TB), and malaria while fostering a healthier, safer, and more equitable future for everyone. We mobilize and invest over US$5 billion annually to combat fatal infectious diseases, confront the injustices that contribute to them, and enhance health systems and pandemic readiness in more than 100 of the most affected countries.

We collaborate with world leaders, communities, civil society, health professionals, and the private sector to develop solutions with a high impact, scaling them up worldwide. Since 2002, our coalition has saved 65 million lives.

We stand as the largest multilateral funder of global health grants in low- and middle-income nations, having allocated over US$65 billion to countries since our inception. We believe that with adequate funding, science, political will, and leadership, we can confront and overcome the deadliest disease threats.

The Global Fund exemplifies the power of collaborative efforts between civil society, governments, private partners, philanthropists, technical experts, and affected communities to save lives and transform the fight against HIV, TB, and malaria.

Apple’s Commitment to World Aids Day

Apple initiated its support for the fund shortly after its establishment. A key aspect of this is the collaboration with (PRODUCT)RED to produce limited edition Apple products in red, contributing up to 50% of profits to the fund.

The introduction of the (RED) iPod Nano marked the start of one of (RED)’s most fruitful partnerships, which eventually expanded to include the hugely popular iPhone [and Apple Watch]. Since 2006, Apple has raised $250 million for HIV testing, treatment, and counseling programs. Apple’s initiatives have also inspired other tech companies and beyond to join in the effort.

Additionally, Apple engages in annual donation campaigns related to sales across all its products during the World Aids Day period.

This year, from November 29th to December 8th, Apple will donate $5 for every purchase made via Apple Pay on apple.com, through the Apple Store app, or at an Apple Store. This contribution supports the Global Fund’s efforts in the battle against AIDS and funds essential health programs that save lives.

Typically, the company also changes Apple Store logos to red on December 1st.
