As reported by Bloomberg, Apple is developing a second-generation version of its well-received and budget-friendly item tracker, the AirTag, which was first launched in 2021. Here’s what we anticipate Apple will bring to AirTag 2.
Enhancements
According to a recent report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, AirTag 2 has reached “manufacturing testing” stages, and there are three significant enhancements to look forward to:
- Extended range
- Advanced wireless chip
- Stronger privacy measures
Apple is expected to debut a new ultrawide-band chip in the forthcoming AirTag, allowing for up to three times the tracking range with precision finding. This improvement means that you will be able to locate your AirTags from distances of 30-90 meters, compared to the 10-30 meters range of the current model. The upgraded wireless chip may also enhance location precision in areas with lower population densities.
In the past, AirTags have been misused for stalking purposes, with some individuals modifying them to silence the built-in speaker, complicating Apple’s ability to inform users of nearby AirTags. Enhancements to anti-stalking features should ideally make it simpler for targeted individuals to detect AirTags in their vicinity.
Launch Timeline
The release of AirTag 2 is anticipated around mid-2025, as noted by Bloomberg:
Apple is developing a new AirTag — codenamed B589 — aiming for a release in the middle of next year.
In the meantime, if you’re interested in acquiring the current version of AirTag, they’re available at discounted prices, with a single AirTag priced at $24, and a 4-pack for $69.99. That comes out to approximately $18 per AirTag with the 4-pack!
