Apple has addressed rising issues related to inaccurate Apple Intelligence notification summaries. In a recent announcement, the company indicated that a software update will be rolled out “in the coming weeks” to enhance clarity when Apple Intelligence generates notification summaries…
An Apple representative communicated to the BBC:
Apple Intelligence features remain in beta, and we are continually enhancing them based on user input. The upcoming software update will offer greater clarity regarding when the displayed text is a summary produced by Apple Intelligence. We encourage users to report any concerns if they encounter unexpected notification summaries.
The BBC has pointed out several cases where Apple Intelligence mishandled summaries from the BBC news application. One notable instance erroneously indicated that Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had taken his own life. Last week, the BBC published another report detailing various other inaccuracies in Apple Intelligence summaries.
This statement from Apple is the first acknowledgment of the BBC’s concerns. The news organization has noted that incorrect Apple Intelligence notification summaries “are undermining trust not only in the BBC but in news and information more broadly.”
Apple has not disclosed specific plans on how it intends to remedy these issues. Currently, Apple Intelligence notification summaries are indicated by a small icon at the start of the summarized text. It appears that the upcoming software update will modify this interface to clearly indicate that the text is generated by AI.
iOS 18.3 is presently undergoing beta testing and is anticipated to be released to the public later this month, potentially including the changes to notification summaries in that update.
You can control which notifications are summarized on your iPhone by accessing the Settings app, selecting “Notifications,” and then choosing “Summarize Notifications.”
