CarPlay 2 Needs a Major Overhaul for Everyone: Here’s How It Should Transform

Despite a 2024 deadline, Apple’s next iteration of CarPlay, known as CarPlay 2, remains elusive. It’s crucial for Apple to consider a completely different strategy and revamp CarPlay 2.

The vision of CarPlay 2 that remains unrealized (for now)

CarPlay 2 was unveiled nearly three years ago during WWDC 2022, promising an enhanced experience: ‘CarPlay, but with maximum integration.’

According to Apple:

CarPlay has transformed the interaction between users and their vehicles, and the upcoming version goes further by integrating more deeply with a vehicle’s hardware. This will allow CarPlay to deliver content across multiple screens, ensuring a seamless experience.

While the concept of a car filled with Apple-designed interfaces was appealing, it understandably posed significant challenges for car manufacturers.

Next-gen CarPlay

In the past, adopting CarPlay was a straightforward decision for many brands (Tesla, we’re looking at you).

However, since the announcement of CarPlay 2, a growing number of automakers have shown hesitance towards Apple’s platform.

Initially, handing over the entirety of a vehicle’s dashboard to Apple seemed the harder sell. Now, even the continued support for the original CarPlay isn’t guaranteed.

Therefore, it’s unsurprising that Apple has not met its 2024 timeline for the first vehicles featuring CarPlay 2.

The landscape of CarPlay support has shifted, necessitating a change in Apple’s approach.

CarPlay 2 is in need of a reboot that prioritizes the needs of the majority.

Adapting CarPlay 2 for Apple’s vast user base

Millions of users currently enjoy the first-generation CarPlay.

However, due to efforts toward CarPlay 2, the original CarPlay has seen minimal updates for years. A few minor AI enhancements in iOS 18.1 simply aren’t enough.

Apple can swiftly pivot and improve this situation.

Instead of aiming for a grand, fully integrated vehicle experience with CarPlay 2, Apple’s reset should focus on enhancing the existing system significantly.

There’s a lot Apple can do to upgrade the current CarPlay without needing automaker collaboration.


Recent leaks have suggested that CarPlay 2 will allow for the addition of custom widgets, similar to what exists on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Apple could easily implement this feature in the existing CarPlay interface, benefiting millions of current users.

If widgets remain exclusive to the full version of ‘next generation CarPlay,’ they may never see widespread use.

Even if CarPlay 2 does eventually roll out, it will be limited to a fraction of vehicles, resulting in a small user base.

What’s the status of the full ‘next-gen CarPlay’ concept?

Apple need not abandon its complete CarPlay 2 plans altogether.

If it wishes to continue collaborating with select manufacturers on comprehensive systems, that’s a viable path. These offerings should indeed be exciting whenever they finally launch.

In the interim, however, Apple can begin to integrate key features from CarPlay 2 into the current version.

This strategy could significantly raise customer satisfaction with CarPlay, enhance brand loyalty, and provide Apple with increased negotiating power with automakers regarding the broader CarPlay 2 vision.
