Is the New MacBook Air Right for You? Here’s Who Should and Shouldn’t Buy It.

It’s a known fact that friends shouldn’t allow friends to purchase a new MacBook Air just before a new version launches, right? Generally, this holds true, but there are two exceptions. Right now, there are two excellent MacBook Air versions available for purchase that provide fantastic value.

M1 or Higher

The first model to consider is the oldest still available: the M1 MacBook Air, currently priced at $649 (regularly $699) at Walmart. If you’re eyeing a MacBook Air older than this one, ensure it is significantly cheaper than $649. The older models rely on Intel chips instead of Apple silicon, which results in reduced performance and capabilities.

Though it’s not the latest technology, the M1 MacBook Air offered exclusively through Walmart remains the most affordable entry point for an Apple laptop.

M2 if Base Model

If your budget permits, the M2 MacBook Air is definitely worth a closer look at its current discounted price of $799 (normally $999). This model boasts the latest MacBook Air design with MagSafe charging, a sleek Midnight color option, and notably, it comes with double the RAM. Apple increased the base RAM from 8GB to 16GB last fall, presumably to support forthcoming Apple Intelligence features more effectively. This is one of the reasons we appreciate Apple Intelligence.

While Apple might offer the M2 MacBook Air for $999, we suggest purchasing it only if you can secure a $200 discount.

M3? Wait for the M4

For everyone else, it’s advisable to hold off for the following reasons:

  • If you’re concerned about the performance upgrade from M2 to M3, waiting for the M4 makes sense. The M4 has been available for a considerable time, and its performance is well documented.
  • If you plan to upgrade your storage or RAM beyond the base 256GB and 16GB, it’s better to wait. Since you’re already paying Apple’s premium upgrade prices, budget should not be a constraint. It’s wise to hold off for the M4 configurations.
  • If you’re interested in a 15-inch MacBook Air, it’s best to wait. The 15-inch MacBook Air is only available with the M3 chip, and Apple doesn’t typically reduces prices just because new models are about to launch.

In summary, if you’re on a budget, don’t hesitate to upgrade. The current deals are compelling. However, if you’re seeking cutting-edge specifications, improved features, or a larger display, it’s best to wait for the upcoming M4 MacBook Air, which is just around the corner.
