iOS 18.3 Temporarily Disables Apple Intelligence Notification Summaries for Certain Apps and More

This afternoon, Apple released the third beta of iOS 18.3 for developers. This update introduces several modifications to the notification summaries feature within Apple Intelligence.

The modifications were prompted by feedback from various news organizations, including the BBC. Two weeks ago, Apple committed to enhancing the clarity of the text displayed as summaries provided by Apple Intelligence in a forthcoming software update.

Below are the modifications included in the iOS 18.3 update for Apple Intelligence notification summaries:

  • With notification summaries enabled, iOS 18.3 will clarify that this feature, like all Apple Intelligence functionalities, operates in beta mode.
  • Users can now turn off notification summaries for a specific app directly from the Lock Screen or Notification Center by swiping, tapping “Options,” and selecting the “Turn Off Summaries” choice.
  • Notification summaries will now appear in italicized text on the Lock Screen, distinguishing them from standard notifications more effectively.
  • In the Settings app, Apple will now notify users that notification summaries “may contain inaccuracies.”

In addition, notification summaries have been temporarily disabled for apps categorized under News & Entertainment. This feature will be reinstated for these apps in a future software update as Apple works to enhance the overall experience.
