A recent rumor hints at a significant redesign for the Camera app with the upcoming iOS 19 release. Jon Prosser discussed in a YouTube video that the revamped Camera app will embody a design philosophy akin to that of visionOS.
iOS 19 Camera App
According to Prosser, he observed the new Camera app for iOS 19 in action. However, to maintain the confidentiality of his source, he didn’t share the original footage. Instead, he recreated it to provide us a glimpse of what the redesign may look like.
For a deeper dive into the anticipated iOS 19 camera interface, you can watch Prosser’s complete video below. The clip illustrates how Apple has streamlined the controls at the bottom of the screen into two primary options: “Photo” and “Video.” Each menu allows switching between modes, adjusting settings like exposure, and more.
At the top of the app, quick-access controls for functionalities such as Live Photos and flash are available, alongside settings for resolution and frame rate. A dedicated button for accessing your photo library remains as well.
DMN’s Perspective
One aspect I find appealing about this new design is how the camera viewfinder occupies a larger portion of the interface. Currently, the Camera app can feel cluttered with numerous controls that interfere with capturing photos or videos. While quick access to these controls is essential, the proposed iOS 19 layout seems to suggest that Apple is refining arrangements to keep frequently used settings easily reachable while reducing clutter.
The design reported in this iOS 19 leak appears to draw inspiration from visionOS and some translucent design principles introduced alongside the Apple Vision Pro. It remains uncertain if this design language will extend to other facets of iOS 19.
Last year, speculation arose that iOS 18 would showcase a design influenced by visionOS, which ultimately didn’t materialize.
For the time being, I would advise approaching this rumor with caution. With five months until Apple’s iOS 19 announcement, there is ample opportunity for shifts in their plans. It’s also conceivable that this design is currently being tested internally without plans for public release.
