Instagram Unveils New ‘Edits’ App as TikTok and CapCut Face Bans, Set to Launch Next Month

Today, Meta has officially launched Edits, a fresh mobile video editing platform. This announcement follows the recent ban of TikTok and CapCut in the US, although TikTok is currently being reinstated, at least for now.

Meta has often delayed unveiling new features until circumstances compel them to act, and this situation is no different. In a surprising Sunday afternoon announcement, the company introduced Edits, a new mobile-centric editing tool designed to rival the widely-used CapCut.

Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, revealed the new ‘Edits’ app today on Threads, characterizing it as a resource for “those of you who are enthusiastic about creating videos on your mobile devices.” He further noted, “There’s a lot happening right now, but regardless of the situation, it’s our responsibility to provide creators with the best possible tools,” likely referencing the ban on TikTok and CapCut.

Regarding features, Edits promises the following, as highlighted in Mosseri’s announcement:

  • An inspiration tab dedicated to sparking creativity
  • A separate tab for tracking your ideas
  • A “significantly enhanced camera” for video shooting
  • “All the expected editing tools”
  • Options to share drafts with friends and fellow creators
  • Seamless exports to Instagram, along with robust insights for Reels content

Besides these points, there’s limited information available. Hopefully, Meta will provide more updates in the upcoming weeks, having tested the app with creators recently.

Starting today, Edits is available for pre-order on the App Store and is expected to launch on iOS sometime in February, according to Meta. However, the App Store pre-order page indicates a launch date in March.

As for Android users, there’s no definitive timeline yet, except that it will arrive “soon.”
