Users of the Apple Watch frequently attribute life-saving capabilities of the gadget during critical health incidents. For John Mackey, the founder of Whole Foods, insights from his Apple Watch were pivotal in enhancing his lifestyle.
This week, Business Insider reported that John Mackey chose to stop drinking alcohol three years ago, a decision partially influenced by the data he gathered from his Apple Watch.
“I wish I’d stopped drinking 30 years ago,” Mackey stated. “That’s 30 years of feeling good that I let slip away.”
Mackey mentioned that his Apple Watch played a significant role in his commitment to abstaining from alcohol.
“I began to monitor my sleep patterns; some nights I’d rest well, while on others I wouldn’t,” he reminisced. “I started to ponder, ‘What changed on the nights I didn’t sleep well?’”
By monitoring his sleep with the Apple Watch and reflecting on his daily routines, Mackey concluded that increased physical activity and avoiding large meals before bedtime resulted in improved sleep quality. However, the most striking revelation was about his lack of deep sleep, as highlighted by the Apple Watch.
Mackey also discussed his journey on the PLANTSTRONG podcast last year, mentioning that he used the AutoSleep app to track his rest. He shared:
“It [Apple Watch] transformed my life. It helped me quit alcohol over two years ago.” […] “I utilize an application on the Apple Watch called AutoSleep to monitor my sleep.
I wear my watch while sleeping and recharge it first thing in the morning.
I’ve gained incredible insights from it because it not only tracks my sleep duration but also assesses my sleep quality and depth. I began to realize that every time I consumed even one beer or a glass of wine, my deep sleep would drop to zero. My total sleep would decrease by about an hour.
I conducted multiple experiments, as I genuinely enjoyed alcohol and was hesitant to give it up. But the evidence was undeniable. Each instance of drinking resulted in no deep sleep. I started to think, perhaps it’s time to stop drinking.
This led to pondering, would I prefer to sleep well or enjoy a drink? The answer has consistently been, over the past two years, that I’d opt for a good night’s sleep. Though I remain open to the possibility that there might come a time when I’d prefer the drink, that moment has yet to arrive.”
Improved sleep leads to a more fulfilling life, and for the founder of Whole Foods, tracking his sleep with the Apple Watch unveiled crucial insights that evidently assisted him in enhancing his well-being.
Sleep tracking is now an integrated feature in the Apple Watch. The Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, and Ultra 2 models can also identify signs of sleep apnea.
