In a notable development for Apple TV+ content, the sci-fi series Silo has achieved its first-ever ranking on the Nielsen U.S. streaming originals chart. It secured the 9th position with a total of 417 million minutes viewed during the week spanning December 30 through January 5.
This marks one of the few instances where an Apple TV+ title has made it onto this chart. Generally, Apple’s shows have struggled to appear on the Top 10 list of streaming originals based on Nielsen’s metrics.
While Apple shows seldom feature on the Nielsen list, some past titles include Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, and Hijack.
Historically, Apple has challenged the validity of Nielsen’s reporting, arguing that it overlooks certain viewing demographics and does not accurately represent the global reach of the Apple TV+ service.
It’s not surprising that Netflix titles dominate the chart, boasting a membership of 90 million subscribers in the U.S.
For the week ending January 5, the chart rankings were as follows:
- Squid Game (Netflix)
- Virgin Riviera (Netflix)
- Landman (Paramount+)
- Missing You (Netflix)
- Evil (Netflix)
- Special Ops: Lioness (Paramount+)
- Black Doves (Netflix)
- No Good Deed (Netflix)
- Silo (Apple TV+)
- Beast Games (Amazon Prime Video)
As of January 5, Silo was actively airing its second season, having released 8 out of 10 episodes. It will be interesting to see if Silo climbs higher in the rankings when Nielsen updates the data for the period covering the season finale.
An important factor to consider is that the dates of January 4-5 coincided with Apple’s free weekend promotion for the Apple TV+ service, allowing anyone to access and enjoy Apple originals without any obligation.
Regardless, its presence on the chart reinforces the notion that Apple is gradually enhancing the reach and engagement levels of its programming.
Apple has previously noted that Silo is among its top drama series. The show has been renewed for both a third and fourth season, which will complete the narrative based on the Hugh Howey book series it is adapted from.
