Apple Maps is set to receive a significant update that will enhance EV routing suggestions for drivers of the Ford Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning.
For those unaware, the Apple Maps EV routing feature simplifies trip planning by automatically adding required charging stops along your journey. It monitors your vehicle’s charge level and considers various factors to determine when and for how long charging will be necessary. This includes considerations like charger availability and speed, elevation changes, and your driving pace.
Currently, the Apple Maps EV routing function is only compatible with three vehicles: the Ford Mustang Mach-E, the Ford F-150 Lightning, and the Porsche Taycan.
Last year, Ford initiated a rollout of adapters that permit Mach-E and Lightning drivers to utilize Tesla Superchargers. Ford’s EVs are equipped with the CCS charging port, and the adapter converts this CCS connection to the North American Charging System (NACS) plug type.
However, the Apple Maps EV routing feature hasn’t yet been updated to incorporate this change. Presently, the routing feature only recognizes the vehicle’s specific plug type, meaning it can only direct Mach-E and Lightning drivers to CCS charging stations, without acknowledging that these vehicles can also charge at NACS stations.
In a recent discussion on the Mach-E Forums, Ford’s lead Mustang Mach-E engineer, Donna Dickson, announced that this limitation will soon be addressed.
You will now have the ability to locate compatible Tesla Superchargers within the Connected Built-in Navigation system in the MY25 Mustang Mach-E. Additionally, locations of compatible Tesla Superchargers can be accessed through Google Maps EV Routing for Android Auto, and this feature will be introduced in Apple Maps EV Routing for Apple CarPlay.
At this time, Ford and Apple have not released further specifics on how this integration will function. It is expected that Ford drivers using a NACS adapter will simply inform Apple Maps of their capability to charge at both CCS and NACS stations. This will enable Apple Maps to deliver more precise and efficient routing suggestions based on this newfound capability.
As a Mustang Mach-E owner, I am eagerly anticipating this upgrade. I hope to receive more updates from Ford and Apple soon.
