After four years since the initial launch of the AirTag, Apple is set to release its successor later this year. The upcoming AirTag 2 promises to introduce a significant feature that could greatly affect both the company and its users.
AirTag 2 will feature speaker protection enhancements

Since the product’s introduction in 2021, there have been instances where individuals have misused it as a stalking tool—removing the speaker makes it less likely for someone to find a concealed AirTag.
The specific method Apple plans to implement this change remains unclear. However, if successful, it would reduce one of the prevalent tactics used by stalkers.
Retaining the speaker in AirTag 2 means users can feel more confident that they’re not being tracked without their knowledge.
Some users might express concerns about this modification, even those with good intentions. For instance, there have been reports of users experiencing their own AirTag emitting loud sounds at inopportune times and places, causing disruptions to pets, business meetings, and other situations.
Hopefully, Apple is considering these scenarios during the development of AirTag 2. Perhaps they can incorporate software solutions to prevent unwanted sound alerts from occurring.
If the speaker protection and overall privacy enhancements in AirTag 2 are effective, they will significantly contribute to user safety and help Apple mitigate the negative publicity generated by the original AirTag.
