Developer Successfully Ports Doom to Apple’s Lightning to HDMI Adapter

You’ve likely come across the phrase “but can it run Doom?” This question has become somewhat of a meme as developers challenge themselves to get Doom running on the most unlikely devices. Recently, a remarkable feat has been achieved: Doom has been successfully run on an Apple Lightning to HDMI adapter.

Doom on Apple’s Lightning to HDMI adapter

A video posted on YouTube (via MacRumors) showcases a developer demonstrating the classic game operating on Apple’s Lightning to HDMI adapter, a device that allows video output from older iPhones and iPads. However, due to the Lightning connector’s bandwidth limitations for HDMI video, Apple has incorporated a SoC within the adapter to manage video compression.

The developer clarifies that the adapter runs a simplified version of iOS. Essentially, the process involved jailbreaking the SoC, which unsurprisingly comes with its own security measures. This allowed for the installation and execution of Doom utilizing the chip from the adapter, with the gameplay being displayed on an external monitor connected to it.

While it’s unlikely many people would choose to play Doom via an adapter, it’s fascinating to see how a simple chip within a dongle can run classic games that previously required more robust hardware. In 2016, a similar achievement was made when another developer got Doom running on the MacBook Pro’s Touch Bar.

On a site called “Can It Run Doom,” you can discover various projects where developers have managed to run Doom on devices like calculators and even digital price tags. Currently, Apple retails the Lightning to HDMI adapter for $49, but it can be found for $39 on Amazon—just in case you still have a need for it!
