Apple Introduces Proximity Pairing for Mac in macOS 15.4

Users of iPhone and iPad are likely well acquainted with the feature known as “proximity pairing.” Launched with iOS 11, this functionality allows for the seamless transfer of backups and other information just by placing devices near each other. Now, it appears that Apple is preparing to introduce proximity pairing capabilities to the Mac.

Proximity pairing setup coming to the Mac

Insights discovered by DMN in the code for iOS 18.4 indicate that proximity pairing will soon be available on the Mac, mirroring its functionality on iPhone and iPad. Users will be guided to scan a pairing code displayed on the Mac using their iOS device, allowing the Mac to automatically import certain settings, such as Apple Account credentials, from the iPhone or iPad.

While macOS already includes some proximity pairing features, they currently apply only to Macs enrolled in MDM (Mobile Device Management) solutions like Apple School Manager, Apple Business Manager, or Apple Business Essentials. At present, standard users setting up a new Mac must manually input their Apple Account information or restore settings from another Mac via Thunderbolt connection.

The new code in iOS 18.4 hints that this solution will soon be accessible to all users with an upcoming software update, likely in macOS 15.4.

Both iOS 18.4 and macOS 15.4 represent significant updates, expanding Apple Intelligence support to additional languages for the first time. Apple’s AI features will now function in French, German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese (simplified), along with localized English for regions like Singapore and India.

This Mac update will also introduce the new Mail app, which made its debut on the iPhone with iOS 18.2.

Apple has indicated that these software updates are scheduled for public release in April.
