AirPods Pro Now Function as Hearing Aids in the UK

As previously mentioned in January, the AirPods Pro 2 have obtained government approval in the United Kingdom to function as hearing aids, allowing users access to over-the-counter hearing aid devices.

These AirPods Pro 2 are capable of assisting individuals with mild to moderate hearing loss. By using an iPhone alongside the AirPods Pro, users can conduct a hearing assessment and create a personalized hearing profile to enhance their auditory experience. This feature is included as part of a complimentary software update.

Apple expressed its excitement about offering a comprehensive hearing health solution to its users in the United Kingdom.

The hearing assessment requires users to wear AirPods Pro, following directions provided on their connected iPhone. The test lasts approximately five minutes and produces a report that indicates the level of hearing loss detected in each ear.

Once completed, users can apply their unique hearing profile to enable the hearing aid function of their AirPods. The results are also stored in the Health app for those who wish to discuss them with a healthcare provider.

This hearing aid capability mainly enhances the ability to perceive environmental sounds, making it easier to engage in conversations. Furthermore, the hearing profile automatically adjusts when users listen to music, movies, and other content on their Apple devices.

Even for those without current hearing loss, the Loud Sound Reduction feature helps diminish the effects of loud environmental noises, potentially preventing hearing damage. This feature activates automatically and operates independently of other Hearing Health options.

The Hearing Health functionalities are exclusive to AirPods Pro 2, which debuted in late 2022. The first-generation AirPods Pro, AirPods 4, as well as AirPods Max and the entire Beats product line do not offer this feature.
