Jony Ive Reflects on Apple and Steve Jobs in Recent BBC Interview

Although it’s been quite some time since Jony Ive parted ways with Apple to start his own design studio, the impact of his contributions to technology remains significant. Recently, he appeared on the BBC’s Desert Island Discs to reflect on his major projects at Apple and reminisce about his relationship with Steve Jobs.

Jony Ive continues to think of Jobs and is thrilled about his new endeavor with OpenAI

Ive shared that it is challenging not to ponder “what would Steve do” even though Jobs once advised him against it. “Whenever I find myself asking, ‘I wonder what Steve would do?’ I realize, ‘Ha! I’m doing precisely what you didn’t want,’” Ive remarked. “It was incredible that, despite my struggles with communication, Steve grasped my thoughts and feelings,” he further noted.

Reflecting on his first experience with a Macintosh, Ive expressed his astonishment at realizing the people behind its creation. He also reminisced about collaborating with Steve Jobs on the original iMac, highlighting that its innovative translucent design mattered more to customers than its specifications.

The acclaimed designer expressed pride in knowing he played a role in transforming the world through the iPhone, which is also one of his groundbreaking designs.

“Innovation often yields unforeseen consequences, and I take pride in and find encouragement from the substantial positive influence, empowerment, and freedom these tools provide to countless individuals. While not-so-positive outcomes may not have been intentional, they do not diminish my sense of responsibility for my past and future decisions. One must possess a unique resolve and discipline to not be captivated by these developments. My family and I have diligently worked to acknowledge the power of these tools and strive to use them responsibly, which, like everyone, I find challenging.”

When questioned about AI, Ive conveyed that individuals need “time to comprehend and respond.” He confirmed that last year he began developing a new AI device project alongside OpenAI, the organization that created ChatGPT. Although he did not disclose specific details during the conversation, he mentioned that it is the first instance in his career where he feels “inspired by capability in this manner.”

Ive departed from Apple in 2019 after contributing over 20 years to the company. He is currently at LoveFrom, his own design studio, which has collaborated with various brands, including Airbnb, Moncler, and even Ferrari. Even though his consultancy contract with Apple concluded in 2022, his influence continues to resonate in the tech community.
