Apple And TSMC Collaborate For Ultra Advanced Displays

Apple has struck a deal with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company or TSMC to work on display technology for the next generation. This reportedly has been taking place at a facility that has been kept a secret in Taiwan. The plan is to develop a micro display of OLED. This is a somewhat different display. It is directly built onto the chip wafers. The company looks forward to using this feature in future reality devices. This was reported by sources.

TSMC has worked previously with Apple as well. The Taiwanese company has been providing chips to the California native for a while now. The thing is, the OLED displays are micro as well but aren’t built on substrates of glass. This is how Televisions, as well as smartphones, are often built. Instead, they are built right onto such wafers, as mentioned above. This allows thinner and smaller displays to consume less power. This also makes them more suitable for utilization in devices that are AR and wearable.

Apple And TSMC’s Relationship

The project and collaboration help deepen the relationship between Apple and the Taiwanese-giant firm. The firm now remains the sole supplier for Iphone’s processors. This comes after Apple has been cutting down on major suppliers and its reliance on them. The firm is also, as per reports, helping the American tech-giant create their in-house designed processors that are central for the Mac laptops.

Less than an inch in size, the new project of Micro OLED is in its initial stage of trial production. It could rack up years before a complete, mass rollout. Along with this one, it is also working upon micro-LED display technology.
