Xiaomi is undoubtedly one of the top manufacturers of smartphones in the world. The company has recently teased a developing technology that will feature in the latest edition of the Mi Mix. It is a lens that is a liquid.
The technology will be the first to ever appear on a commercial handset. The lens will have the ability to adjust the focal length and focus by changing the liquid element of the lens.
Xiaomi Continues To Be Pathbreaking
Reportedly, the new technology will enable Xiaomi to replace multi-camera arrangements that are currently the norm for smartphones. Instead, the singular camera can handle all the intricate photography capabilities provided by multiple lenses just by itself. It can do so because it can theoretically have whichever focal length and focus the user may need.
The concept itself is not a recent discovery. However, this will be the first time it will available to the general public. According to experts, liquid lenses can overcome the limitations of having a single depth of field. It does so by adjusting the focus using an electrical current without any need for a mechanical movement. As such, the usual ways of altering focus points will have an easy replacement that will not compromise on the quality of the image or require a larger lens.
So far, the technology has only featured in some industrial sectors. The expert continued that like normal solid optical lenses, liquid lenses follow the same principles of optics. This is why modifying the radius of curvature of the lens electronically allows the lenses to be much more versatile.
However, in the previous iteration, the Xiaomi Mi 11, the default software was a major obstacle to the camera technology. At the same time, the company is known for introducing concepts that are often the first of its kind. As such, hopes are high on what Xiaomi will be able to offer.
