The Snapdragon 780G from Qualcomm is the company’s latest addition for more affordable handsets. The Snapdragon 888 is the company’s best chipset as of now. It powers a host of flagship phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S21 and other gaming-oriented phones.
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 780G promises high-end performance to less pricy phones. This chip is the next in line with the 768G and the 765G chips that were released last year. The previous ones were chosen as the heart for phones such as Google’s Pixel 5. The latest addition is a refreshing update for the company’s mid-range processor line.
Specification Of The Snapdragon 780G
The Snapdragon 780G is built on the Kryo 670 central processing unit. The company claims that it is about 40% speedier than last year’s chip. The GPU is the Adreno 642. It can support displays that have a 144Hz refresh rate. The chip is also built on the 5nm architecture. This is the first of Qualcomm’s 7-series to do so. It should provide more efficiency in power management.
Furthermore, the Snapdragon 780G has the company’s 6th-generation AI engine. The Hexagon 770 processing unit along with the fused AI accelerator powers the chip. Qualcomm claims this setup can deliver 12 TOPS which is almost double the performing capabilities of earlier generations. An additional AI accelerator is present to filter out the background sounds during a call.
The newest 780G comes with the Spectra 750 ISP. This supports photos in low light, 4k HDR, as well as handling three photos of 25MP at the same time. The FastConnect 6900 will enable Wi-Fi 6R connectivity and support Bluetooth 5.2. The company also claims the chip can handle a 5G speed of a maximum of 3.3 Gbps.
The company expects the chip to hit the market by the time this year’s second quarter ends.
