After LG, it is TCL’s turn to tease a foldable concept of a phone. However, the Fold n Roll is more akin to the monster of Frankenstein than a completely new one. It is a mesh of some concepts showcasing flexibility that have been shown previously.
What Is Shown Of The Fold N Roll
It works with the “dragonhinge” technology from TCL and brings a display panel that can be extendable. The final design is a display spanning 6.7 inches that can partially be expanded to span 8.85 inches or fully extended to 10 inches. For now, there is no other information offered by TCL.
The company has stated that they are currently exploring the detailed specifications of the Fold N Roll. This is possibly an indication that the device will not be available for purchase anytime soon. However, TCL has talked about its plans for launching some type of phone that has foldable technology by the time 2021 comes to an end. There has been no shortage of concepts featuring foldable displays from the company. Most recently, the virtual CES featured several of the company’s displays that are currently under development.
However, there is quite a long way to go between developing concepts and then converting them into a mass-produced product for the market. Nevertheless, TCL has a sizable gap to potentially fill with their foldable screen technology like the Fold n Roll. It will be even more lucrative should they manage to keep the price affordable.
For now, phones that can be rolled are mostly exclusive for the high end of the budget spectrum. As such, TCL is in a very good position to come out with a more affordable version. Among its competitors, Samsung has also teased upcoming affordable foldable phones. Until then, however, the Z Fold 2 and the Galaxy Z Flip are the two pricey options available.
