Instagram Tests New Feature That Hides ‘Likes’

Instagram will currently begin testing a new feature that should let users hide how many Likes there are on other’s posts. The platform has already experimented with this feature back in 2019. This time is not an extension of the previous test, however.

The Latest Experiment By Instagram

Instagram intends to pursue a new direction this time around and let users decide for themselves as to what is better. They can decide between being able to see the number of Likes on someone else’s post or keep it hidden. Users can also choose to hide the number of Likes on their posts as well. Facebook has also confirmed they will begin experimenting with a similar feature.

The platform claims that such tests fell down the priority list after the pandemic hit because it needed to focus on other directions to help out the community. As such, the time has come for Instagram to take a look at the collected feedback from back then. Originally, the concept was introduced to reduce the embarrassment and anxiety surrounding content posted on any social network. That is, viewers would judge the popularity depending on the number of Likes.

Moreover, removing Likes also got rid of the herd mentality that made people prefer already popular things and avoid judging content on their own. However, the opinions were varied when the tests took place. Some users preferred to see the count so that they could know what is popular and trending. The count was more useful for influencers whose marketing value for partners and brands was determined by it. As such, a lower rate would mean lower pay for the creators.

Instagram has considered both opinions and thus decided to allow users to choose for themselves. The latest test will only be for a small part of users all over the world. Users who have been chosen will see an added option regarding Likes under Settings.
