Ex-Nintendo Chief Doesn’t Think Much Of Metaverse From Meta: Not Innovative Enough

Former Nintendo head Reggie Fils-Aime doesn’t think that Metaverse is destined to succeed on its own. Reggie is the former boss of Nintendo America. He says that companies such as Meta are not adequately innovative to succeed at metaverse. The ex-Nintendo chief thinks that Meta’s model of business doesn’t fit in with the definition of a metaverse, they don’t quite mesh, he says.

Fils-Aime says that the metaverse was a digital space for interacting with friends in a combination of both gaming and social sort of entertainment. So it is both digital and social. The Nintendo ex-chief said that there is a potential to truly interact with people who are potential friends, and existing friends.

Fils-Aime said that Roblox and Fortnite already have elements of the metaverse. The Nintendo ex-chief points out the events at Fortnite, such as concerts, were not truly gaming events. Fils-Aime also believes that the vast experiences of Roblox are another prime example of the metaverse.

Nintendo Man Says Meta Not Successful At Release Of Physical Product Release

Fils-Aime believes that Meta’s failure to succeed in the field of metaverse can be summed up in two major points. The first is the need to think of the customer if one has to be innovative. The ex-Nintendo man says he doesn’t believe that Meta gives much thought to the customer and instead remains focused on revenues.

Fils-Aime says that a company needs to bring fresh and innovative ideas into the marketplace. These things drive innovation.

He also says that Meta doesn’t have the right track record in releasing physical products. Despite its acquisition of Oculus, Facebook’s VR set-up has not reached the heights that could be considered a success for a company like Meta.

The total figures sold for all products including Oculus stood at a mere 320M devices in a year. Fils-Aime says that such a figure was a normal hardware sales figure during his stint at Nintendo.

That ties in with his other major opinion that a focus solely on VR when it comes to the metaverse will not bring success. Fils-Aime believes that Augmented Reality has a greater chance of success than Virtual Reality. He cites the example of Nintendo 3DS and Pokemon Go as examples of successful Augmented Reality functionalities and experiences.
